Mitel is the only alternative that can read the SNMP-based location information directly off of any managed switch and automatically report that to 911 services. Here’s how it happens:
Every time a Mitel or Telematrix IP phone boots from the network it can read the location information for the port that it’s connected to from the network switch. It then reports this information to the Mitel 3300 controller, which relays it to the PSAP (Public Service Answering Point). This means that even when Mitel phones are moved from network port to network port the PSAP can have the current location of the phone, to the extent that the location information is entered into the switch (down to the specific room or jack location, if needed).
The important thing to remember is that this is all done automatically, once the basic system is set up. And it will work with anyone’s managed switches, so if the phone is moved from, say a Hewlett-Packard to a Cisco or Enterasys switch, the location information will automatically be forwarded to the PSAP.
This will take three things: entering that location information into the switches, setting up that updating relationship with the PSAP, and installing a network connection (generally a T-1) from the network to the PSAP for the transmission of this information. For more information, contact us.
We are open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm EST.
