MXN hosts end user conferences
MXN introduces a new communications appliance
MXN introduces the ProCurve Challenge Program
We’re hosting two end user conferences—one in Savannah on March 13-14, and one in Chattanooga on April 10-11.
This is the year of network security, and these two-day conferences—for existing MXN clients—will have formal training on 802.1x and RADIUS, network access control systems for Hewlett-Packard networks, and seminars on wireless implementation and wireless security. We will also have a vendor display area with security, networking, voice on IP, and video on IP technologies on display.

Voice over IP (VoIP) can be used to completely replace an existing voice system, of course. We have products that can completely and efficiently replace an existing PBX, and we have products that can be installed as a part of a transition plan from conventional PBX-based to fully network-based systems.
But voice over IP is more about services than just replacing basic voice with another basic voice system. Voice over IP can also be used to quickly introduce new services to existing TDM voice networks, without changing these systems at all, and without changing the existing data networks. We have taken a voice over IP appliance and added software to it, and this appliance can be used to add services to your existing PBX. These services allow you to do some or all of the following:
Take a laptop PC or phone anywhere in the world and remain a local extension off of your existing phone system. This is ideal for disaster recovery operations, support of a traveling sales force or traveling technical and service crew.
Conduct training sessions over the Internet to any number of places. If you’re paying for a webinar service now, you can do away with it and pay this new system back in a matter of a month or two. You can also add one-way video to this service, for more personal contact with your users, clients and prospects.
Add voicemail integrated with email to your existing phone system, so that people can have a better voicemail utility than they have now.
Create a low-cost, high-function call center to your existing phone system, and then have the call center workers located anywhere in the southeast, or for that matter, anywhere in the world.
Have a need to improve services for your organization, but don’t want to undergo the cost and complexity of a system upgrade? This appliance just bolts on to your existing PBX to provide those services. And the services can generally be implemented in a matter of a day or two.

We challenge you, network user to try out and then NOT use Hewlett-Packard network equipment. Who knows? You could be the first one to try it and not buy it! We have prepared four challenge packages for your use.
Here’s how it works: you choose one or more of these easily-installed and used challenge packages for a specific purpose, we jointly agree on the exact equipment list and configuration, you send us a conditional purchase order, and we send you the equipment package. You get to install, use and test them for up to sixty days for no cost at all. If you need to have implementation assistance we provide it from an on-site engineer, or from an engineer remotely attached to your network, with videoconferencing and collaboration tools. If you want to keep the equipment at the end of the trial, you pay the special trial price that’s a lot less than the regular price (our thanks for taking the trial) and keep the network equipment in service. If you don’t want to keep the equipment (there’s always a first time, we suppose) we send you a mailing label and you send it back, postage pre-paid.
What else do you get from this program? You get to save thousands of dollars, or perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars, on the cost of your network project, and on the cost of the support over the life of the equipment. Already have other network equipment? No problem—Hewlett-Packard ProCurve integrates well with other manufacturers’ products. Most of our clients run networks of mixed equipment.
What do you invest in the program? You invest a little time and effort. We’ll do most of the work for you, configuring the equipment, and in many cases, installing it for you.
This is open only to people who are not currently ProCurve customers, please.
Challenge package one, Wireless networking. We’ll provide, install and configure a wireless edge services module (WESM) that will control up to 36 radios, or another WESM to control up to 175 radios. We will provide and install enough wireless radios on your existing network to make a tightly managed, resilient and adaptive wireless network in one area (building, floor, area) of your organization. The package can have as many as ten radios. This can be added to your existing network equipment without having to change any of that equipment, or without having to change the configurations of that network equipment.

Why you’d do this. You’d do this if you need to implement a well-ordered, self-healing network with an upgrade path to the newer 802.11n standard to replace the conventional wireless network that you have now, or if you needed to provide wireless network services for the first time. You’d consider Hewlett-Packard if you wanted to implement an easily-managed, full-featured network at a very moderate cost.
Challenge package two, high capacity networking. We’ll provide, install and configure a high-capacity, managed, Layer 3 Ethernet switch in the core or distribution layer of your existing network. This will be a switch that has the ability to switch or route up to 144 or up to 288 gigabit Ethernet connections at full wire speeds, without buffering or dropping a packet. We’ll provide up to four gigabit Ethernet fiber ports, up to two ten- gigabit fiber or copper ports, and up to 48 gigabit Ethernet copper ports, and connect these ports to your existing network, or to a test network. We’ll show you how to manage the switch using ProCurve Manager and Manager Plus network and device management applications.

Why you’d do this. You’d do this if you need to upgrade your current networks, but want to examine ways to provide better performance at the core and distribution layers than you were planning to introduce, for something less than half the cost that you were planning to pay.
Challenge package three, very low-cost, high-function edge networking. We’ll provide two 10/100 BASE-T switches or two 10/1001000 BASE-T switches, unpowered or POE (your option), and install them in one of your wiring closets. We’ll connect them to your upstream switch with a copper connection or a fiber connection of from 100 to 10,000 megabits/second. We’ll show you how to manage the switch using ProCurve Manager and Manager Plus network and device management applications.

Why you’d do this. You’d do this if you were facing a general network upgrade, or an upgrade from old switches or hubs at the edge of your network, and wanted to choose a highly manageable, very low cost edge device to provide network connections to your end users. You’d also do this if you were planning to implement voice on IP, a wireless network, or some other service that required the delivery of power over the network connection and also wanted the same high function, low cost alternative configuration.
Challenge package four, low-cost, high function routing. We’ll provide two 7102-series or two 7203-series routers and connect them together over one of your wide area network connections, or provide one router and integrate it with your existing core router. We’ll connect the router to a T-1 (frame relay or dedicated), fractional T-1 (frame relay or dedicated), DSL, or ISDN connection. We’ll show you how to set up the built-in firewall rules, cyber defense engine and the policy-based routing that prioritizes applications, users and ehnd systems. We’ll show you how to manage the switch using ProCurve Manager and Manager Plus network and device management applications.

Why you’d do this. You want to upgrade the routers on your existing wide area network, or you want to add more remote sites to your existing network, and you’d like to save money on the purchase as well as on support (with Hewlett-Packard, all networking products carry a free lifetime hardware replacement and software upgrade program).
